> *"Inner work doesn't happen in the ceremony. It happens on Monday morning."*

I’m sitting at Camp Cove, in Watsons Bay, Sydney.

It’s a beautiful, slow Monday afternoon.

A few people are lying on the sand. Kids are playing near the water. Every now and then a ferry crosses the harbour. The city feels very far away.

My feet are buried in the sand.

I’m still completely blown away from my first Ayahuasca experience the day before.

It was explosive.

I keep looking at the horizon, replaying everything that happened.

At the end of the ceremony, before everybody left, the woman leading it said something that has stayed with me ever since.

“You have to integrate.”

`Integrate.`

At the time, I thought I understood what she meant.

Now I think she gave me the most important lesson of the whole experience.

Because the ceremony itself is only a catalyst.

The real work starts afterwards.

It starts when you go back to work on Monday morning.

When your boss annoys you.

When your partner pushes your buttons.

When you’re stuck in traffic.

When life becomes ordinary again.

That’s integration.

Bringing what you experienced during a few extraordinary hours into the thousands of ordinary moments that make up the rest of your life.

---

I’ve spent the better part of the last twenty years orbiting these worlds.

Yoga studios.

Meditation retreats.

Shamanic ceremonies.

Family Constellations.

Reiki.

Psychedelics.

Chakras.

Energy Work.

Sound Healing.

Breathwork.

People who dedicate their lives to spirituality.

Some of them changed me forever.

Some of them didn’t.

But over the years, one question kept coming back.

What if extraordinary experiences aren’t where transformation happens?

What if they’re simply where transformation begins?

It’s easy to be healthy when you’re surrounded by healthy people.

When everyone around you wakes up at five in the morning, goes surfing before work, trains every day, drinks green juice and talks about longevity over coffee.

Spend enough time in places like Sydney or Miami and, before you know it, those habits slowly become your own.

Environment is contagious.

But I’ve also lived in New York.

I’ve trained through freezing winter mornings when every part of your body wanted to stay under the blankets.

I’ve chosen not to drink while everybody around me was drinking.

I’ve chosen not to smoke when everybody around me was smoking weed.

I’ve walked away from drugs while cocaine was almost considered normal in certain social circles.

Those choices felt different.

Because the environment wasn’t carrying me anymore.

Maybe spirituality works the same way.

It’s easy to feel peaceful at the end of a retreat.

It’s easy to feel connected after drinking ayahuasca in the Amazon.

It’s easy to feel present while watching the sunset in Bali.

It’s easy to feel balanced when you’re surrounded by people whose entire life revolves around balance.

None of those experiences are fake.

Quite the opposite.

Some of them can change your life.

But they’re also protected environments.

Almost like greenhouses.

A plant growing inside a greenhouse isn’t weak.

But you don’t really know how strong it is until you plant it outside.

Maybe we’re not that different.

---

Life has given me opportunities to test that.

I’ve managed to stay calm while an entire workplace slowly built a case to push me out of the company.

I’ve stayed calm while police officers knocked on my apartment door because my relationship had exploded into chaos, and for a moment it looked as though they were there to arrest me.

I’ve stayed calm through unemployment.

Through uncertainty.

Through moments when I genuinely had no idea what would come next.

Not because I’m enlightened.

Far from it.

I still get angry.

I still overthink.

I still make mistakes.

But those moments taught me something that no retreat ever could.

Life is the practice.

The ceremony simply introduces you to it.

---

Sometimes I wonder if we approach spirituality the same way we approach travelling.

You spend two weeks in Italy, Costa Rica or Japan and, before getting on the plane home, you catch yourself saying the same sentence everyone says.

“I could live here.”

Maybe.

Or maybe you’re simply meeting that place without deadlines.

Without emails.

Without bills.

Without responsibilities.

You’re not meeting everyday life.

You’re meeting a beautiful exception.

Maybe that’s why so many of us come back from retreats convinced we’ve changed forever.

Then Monday arrives.

Traffic.

Notifications.

The difficult colleague.

The bills.

The children.

The partner.

The thousand little frictions that quietly shape a life.

Perhaps retreats don’t reveal who we are.

Perhaps they reveal who we could become under ideal conditions.

Everyday life reveals who we’ve actually become.

---

Every hero eventually returns home.

For years I thought the adventure was the important part.

Now I think the return is.

Leaving the ordinary world is exciting.

Returning to it without forgetting what you’ve discovered...

That’s much harder.

Maybe the real ceremony doesn’t happen in the jungle.

Maybe it begins on Monday morning.

---

I remember another lesson from the day before.

“Stay in the body.

Turn off the mind.”

The afternoon wind slips through my shirt.

I look at the horizon one last time.

Then I smile.

I take my clothes off until I’m only wearing my speedo.

I run into the water.

I swim toward the open bay.

I stay underwater for as long as my lungs allow.

And for a few seconds...

I convince myself I’m a fish.
