# Rocky Balboa and the Power of One

I watched Rocky again today, after many many years. It’s funny how you go back to the films of your childhood and see them completely differently — you catch nuances that didn’t exist before, you understand things that were impossible to grasp as a kid, simply because you hadn’t yet lived the experiences that teach you how to see.

I always saw Rocky as a boxing film. One of the greatest sports movies ever made — about training, motivation, getting fired up. A flag planted in the ground for those of us, like me, who grew up in the gym.

But today, with four decades behind me and a lot more scars, I watched a completely different film.

I saw a love story. I saw a man with the courage to walk toward a fate that was already written — alone in the ring, with nothing but his values and his soul. I saw someone capable of being vulnerable, of turning that vulnerability into his greatest weapon. This is Stage 7 of the Hero’s Journey — the **Road of Trials** — where our weaknesses, when faced instead of hidden, become the source of our deepest strength. Someone who looks past the surface and sees the substance beneath. Who, after nearly beating the heavyweight champion of the world, has only one thought: to call Adrian — his woman, his center of gravity. Stage 8 — **Meeting with the Goddess** — love as the anchor that gives meaning to the entire battle.

Rocky is a simple man who, despite the environment, despite the pressure, despite everything, stays faithful to himself. To his principles. To his values. That is the real heroism — not winning the fight, but refusing to betray who you are while you’re fighting it. This is Stage 11 — **Apotheosis** — the transformation that doesn’t happen when you win, but when you stop being afraid to lose.

And then Desmond came to mind.

In our interview, and in another one I had come across before we ever met — the one that made me reach out to him in the first place — **Desmond Meade** said something simple and devastating: *the power of one person can change the world.* One single person. With a clear vision, a clean heart, the feeling of doing what is right — even when standing alone in the ring. Even when everyone else has already decided how it’s going to end.

I was talking about something similar with a colleague just a few days ago. About how we tend to seek safety in the group, in consensus, in the crowd — while the real transformation, the kind that actually matters, always begins with one individual standing alone with their own conscience. Stage 5 — **Crossing the Threshold** — the moment you decide to move forward despite the fear, without guarantees, without anyone holding your hand.

Those who fight with their head held high will never truly lose.

Not because they win every fight — Rocky doesn’t, technically. But because they remain whole. And that integrity is a victory no judge can ever take from you. This is Stage 18 — **Freedom to Live** — existing without fear, without regret, faithful to who you are. The final freedom of the true hero.
