Hero's Journey #5

Crossing the Threshold

Hero's Journey #5

This is the moment when the Hero begins his journey, setting out on his path. It is one of the most important stages of the journey.

Here, the Hero enters the unknown world, leaving behind the ordinary world. In this new realm, there are different rules and unfamiliar limits that the Hero does not yet understand.

The adventure begins.

Of course, this decision carries a series of “consequences”:

  1. It marks a point of no return—life will never be the same as before.
  2. Challenges arise, testing the Hero’s determination and willingness to continue the journey.
  3. Everything is uncertain—there is no guarantee of success.

Isn’t this the case whenever we change jobs?

Or when we end an important relationship, move to a new city, confront our own beliefs and limitations to move forward, launch a podcast, start a creative project, or build a new business? These are all examples of this stage.

An interesting theme at this point is the inner conflict that surfaces after making the decision—the doubts that emerge. In fact, this threshold, this crossing, is both an external and an internal one.

Inner Conflict:

  • "I'm just a farm boy, not a Jedi says Luke Skywalker.
  • “Why me? Frodo doubts whether he can handle the burden of carrying the Ring.
  • "Am I really The One?" Neo questions himself.
  • “Do I belong here?” Harry wonders as he enters the wizarding world.

At this stage, themes of self-doubt and imposter syndrome emerge.

Themes in the Hero’s Psyche at This Stage

  1. Self-Doubt"Am I strong enough? Smart enough? Worthy?"
  2. Fear of the Unknown"What if I fail? What’s on the other side?"
  3. Letting Go of Comfort – Leaving behind a safe but limited life.
  4. Testing of Beliefs – The world isn’t what the Hero thought; they must re-evaluate everything.

We all experience moments where we must “cross a threshold.” These are turning points when we leave behind the familiar (our comfort zone) and step into something new and uncertain, yet potentially life-changing.

Just like these heroes, we face Threshold Guardians (societal expectations, financial struggles, naysayers, our own fears) before stepping into something new.

The real battle is often within.

See you in the next one.
