The Hero’s Journey — The Complete Series
All 17 stages of Joseph Campbell’s framework, explored one by one. Start here.
A couple of years ago, a friend told me about Joseph Campbell and his Hero’s Journey while we walked along a cliff in Australia, barefoot, overlooking the ocean.
That conversation changed something in me. It gave me a lens — a way to make sense of my own story, and everyone else’s.
Since then, I’ve been writing about it. Stage by stage. One article at a time.
This is that series — in order, from beginning to end.
Whether you’re just discovering this framework or you’ve been following along from the start, this is your map.
THE DEPARTURE
Leaving the known world behind
0. What is the Hero’s Journey? Who was Joseph Campbell, and why does this framework matter? Start here if you’re new.
1. The Ordinary World Every journey begins at the starting point — the familiar life that no longer fits.
2. The Call to Adventure Something disrupts the routine. A sign. A catalyst. The invitation to change.
3. Refusal of the Call Why we instinctively say no — and why we prefer a known hell to an unknown heaven.
4. Supernatural Aid The mentor appears. The guide who gives us the tools — and the courage — to go forward.
5. Crossing the Threshold The point of no return. Life will never be the same.
6. Belly of the Whale The darkest moment. The death of the old self. The necessary disintegration before rebirth.
THE INITIATION
The trials that transform
7. Road of Trials The series of tests and obstacles that forge the hero into who they need to become.
8. Meeting with the Goddess An encounter with love, wisdom, or a force greater than the self. The sacred union.
9. Woman as the Temptress The seduction of comfort. The moment we are tempted to abandon everything we’ve been building.
10. Atonement with the Father The most psychologically intense stage. Confronting the ultimate authority — external or internal.
11. Apotheosis Death and rebirth. The hero transcends their former self and sees the world differently.
12. The Ultimate Boon The reward. The treasure. The gift that was never really about the treasure.
THE RETURN
Bringing the wisdom back
13. Refusal of the Return Why the transformed hero resists going back — and why returning is the real final test.
14. The Magic Flight The resistance that comes when we try to bring our transformation back into the real world.
15. Rescue from Without In this moment, the hero finds themselves stuck, exhausted, or reluctant to return to the ordinary world
16. The Crossing of the Return Threshold It is not just a physical return—it’s a test to see if they can integrate the wisdom and power they have acquired into their old life.
17. Master of the Two Worlds Yet, the challenge now is not survival, but reconciliation—how to exist in a world that no longer fits the person they’ve become.
18. Freedom to Live One of the hardest things for the hero to accept is the reality of the sorrows and banalities of ordinary human existence.
This series is based on Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces — one of the most important books ever written about the human experience. I didn’t study mythology in school. I found this framework on a cliff in Australia, barefoot, talking to a Brazilian surfer. And it never left me.
By just being here — with your questions, your fears, your path — you are already a hero.
