What is this Hero's Journey I talk about?

As I mentioned in the previous article, I came across Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey almost ten years ago.

But who was this guy, and what exactly is the Hero’s Journey?

Joseph Campbell was a mythologist who, as a passionate student of the world’s major religions, myths, legends, and folklore stories, identified a common pattern running through all of them. He wrote a book called The Hero with a Thousand Faces, in which he essentially outlines this structure — a universal path of evolution that unites all cultures across the globe. This pattern later became known as The Hero’s Journey.

Thousand Faces because every culture tells the same core story, just with different "faces" or characters. Whether it’s:

• Odysseus in Greek mythology
• Luke Skywalker in Star Wars
• Simba in The Lion King
• Frodo in The Lord of the Rings
• or even your own personal experience, your own story —

They’re all different versions of the same journey — the journey of the hero.

Despite being from different times, cultures, and genres, these heroes all follow the same emotional and transformational arc. Here are the common traits that unite them:

• An Ordinary Beginning – They all start out in a familiar, often humble or flawed world.

• A Call to Adventure – Something disrupts their normal life and pulls them toward the unknown.

• Resistance or Doubt – They hesitate or reject the call due to fear, insecurity, or duty.

• A Mentor Appears – A wise guide offers knowledge, tools, or encouragement.

• Entering the Unknown – They step into a new world full of uncertainty, tests, and change.

• Trials & Allies – They face obstacles, make allies, and grow stronger through challenges.

• A Major Crisis or Inner Death – They confront a dark moment that transforms them deeply.

• A Gift or Revelation – After the crisis, they gain insight, power, or a symbolic treasure.

• Return & Integration – They go back to their old world, bringing wisdom or healing.

• They’re Changed – They’re no longer who they were when the journey began.

Why does the Hero’s Journey resonate with me so deeply?

Because it feels like the perfect lens through which to see, analyze, and truly understand each of our own evolutionary paths.

Our life, the characters we meet along the way, the obstacles and the abysses. The rebirths.

To understand. To process. To become aware. To evolve.

The Hero’s Journey is made up of 17 stages, which I’ll be exploring in the upcoming articles.
